Dr.James Mwangi, MBS
Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director
Dr. Mwangi holds an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration (Honoris Causa), from The Kenya Methodist University, Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) Kenyatta University, and Doctor of Entrepreneuship from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He is also the holder of a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Accounting Option) from the University of Nairobi and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA (K). Dr. Mwangi is a graduate of Advanced Management Programme (Strathmore- IESE Business School, Barcelona Spain). He has wide experience in the banking industry spanning over 18 years.

Gerald is a Certified Public Accountant (Kenya) and a graduate of Advanced Management Programme (Strathmore-IESE Business School, Barcelona Spain). He has over 14 years experience in the banking sector having previously worked with Fidelity Bank and 10 years at Equity Bank.

Mary Wamae,
Director of Corporate Strategy & Company Secretary
Mary holds a LLB degree from the University of Nairobi, a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law and is a Certified Public Secretary (Kenya). She is a graduate of Advanced Management Programme (Strathmore-IESE Business School, Barcelona Spain). She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Gender and Development. She has over 14 years of private practice experience.

Wahome Gakuru, PhD,
Director - Marketing, Advocacy and Policy
Before joining Equity Bank in 2008, Dr. Wahome Gakuru had been the Ag. Director in charge of the Kenya Vision 2030 at the Ministry of State for Planning, National Development and Vision 2030. He was also the Director, Social Sector Department at the National Economic and Social Council (NECS). Prior to joining NECS in January 2006, Dr Gakuru was the head of Strategy Development at the National AIDS Control Council. Dr. Gakuru has over 15 years experience in teaching management at the School of Business, University of Nairobi as well as other universities. He has worked as a management consultant in both the private and public sectors. Dr. Gakuru has received many honors and awards including being a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship from the US Government. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the African Competitiveness Forum, The Competitiveness Institute, as well as numerous other international organizations. Dr. Gakuru received his PhD in 2004 from Arizona State University majoring in Public Administration and Policy. He also holds MBA degrees from Willamette University, USA, and the University of Nairobi.

Henry Karugu,
Director -Product Development and Research
Henry holds a Bachelors degree in Pharmacy from the University of Nairobi, a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). He has over 15 years working experience in marketing, having previously worked as Marketing Director, GlaxoSmithKline for East and West Africa where he rose from a Brand Manager to the Marketing Manager of the same company.

Finance Director
John holds a Masters degree in Business Administration and is a member of ICPAK, and KIM. He has over 20 years of banking experience, having worked for Standard Chartered Bank as Head of Finance, Systems & Processes- Africa Region, Head of Finance, Shared Services Centre - East & Southern Africa Region, and Finance Director in Tanzania &
Botswana.

Allan Waititu,
Director of Projects
Allan is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, a Novell Certified Network Engineer and a graduate of Advanced Management Programme (Strathmore-IESE Business School, Barcelona Spain). He has over 17 years experience in the information technology industry having previously worked for Trade Bank, Daima Bank and Phoenix Assurance.

Rodney G. Schuster,
Director – Regional Expansion
Rodney holds an MA-International Development and a BA in Geography. Has over ten years experience in microfinance. Was founder member of Uganda Microfinance Ltd/Uganda Microfinance Union and worked previously in West Africa-Sierra Leone & Togo. He joined the Bank in 2008.

Mbaabu Muchiri ,
Director, Credit
Mbaabu holds a Master in Business Administration (MBA) from the United States International University (USIU), a Bachelor of Education degree and is a Certified Public Accountant (Kenya), a Certified Public Secretary (Kenya) and a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA). He is a graduate of Advanced Management Programme (Strathmore- IESE Business School, Barcelona Spain). He has over 16 years of management experience having previously worked with Central Bank of Kenya and Coca-Cola Africa

John Staley,
Director - Shared Services
John has a BSc in Physics from the University of Natal, and an MSc in Applied and Computational Mathematics from the University of the Witwatersrand. He went on to obtain a BCommpt (Honours) degree from the University of South Africa before qualifying as a Chartered Accountant (SA) in 1996. He has a wide range of experience in both finance and ICT, but has focused mainly on implementing cost effective ICT solutions into the companies he has been involved with. He was the CEO of Credit Indemnity (Pty) Ltd, one of the largest microlending companies in South Africa and previously worked with Equity Bank in 2003. John joined Equity again at the start of 2009.

Michael Wachira ,
Director - Treasury & Trade Finance
Michael holds a BSc in Economics from the University of Buckingham (UK) and an MSc in Investment Management from City University’s Cass Business School (UK). Prior to joining Equity Bank, he worked in Brussels, Belgium for the Fortis Bank group (Fortis Bank and Belgolaise Bank) in trading, sales and research roles in major and emerging markets. His last assignment in Fortis Bank was to develop an emerging market sales business geared to selling African, Asian, Eastern & Central European and Latin American plain vanilla and derivative products to financial institutions such as commercial banks, central banks and fund managers. Prior to joining the Fortis Group in 2000, Michael was an Emerging Markets Proprietary Trader focusing on the Middle East and Africa for Cargill Financial Markets based in the London and Istanbul. Michael, a Kenyan national, joined the bank in 2009.

Dr. Catherine Munene,
General Manager - Human Resources
Dr. Munene received her PhD from Edith Cowan University, Australia having majored in adoption and evaluation of self service technologies. She also holds a Masters of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Commerce degree. She joins Equity Bank from Kenya Airways. Prior to joining Kenya Airways Dr. Munene was an Assistant Professor of Marketing at USIU. She also lectured at AUSI College in Nairobi and Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia.

General Manager- Alternate Business Channels
Sam holds a B.Sc in Mathematics and Computer Science and Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Science from the University of Nairobi. He is a Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA). He has over 26 years experience in the information and communication technology field and over 19 years experience in banking IT and operations having worked with CRDB in Tanzania, Central Bank of Kenya and Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Ltd. Mr. Kamiti, a Kenyan national, joined the Bank in 2006.

Peter holds a Bachelor of Education (Science) degree from Kenyatta University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Science. He has over 14 years experience in IT having previously worked for ABC Bank, ABN AMRO Bank among others.

Samuel Makome,
General Manager - Shared Services and Operational Risk
Samuel holds a Bachelor Science (Engineering) Degree from the University of Nairobi and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (London). He has over 16 years of Banking experience in Operations, Operational Risk and Consumer Banking having worked with major local and international banks including Citibank N.A and KCB and was a Senior Regional Manager with Standard Chartered Bank, Africa. Prior to joining Equity in 2009, he was an Executive Director with Bank of Africa, Uganda.

Ben is a qualified banker and a member of the Institute of Bankers. He previously worked for the Muranga Cooperative Union and Continental Bank in senior positions. Ben has over 37 years of banking experience.

Ambrose Juma Lugho,
Head of Custodial Services
Ambrose holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Kenyatta University. He has over 13 years experience in management having previously worked with Kenya Wide Securities Ltd, a local NSE Stock brokerage Company, Mackenzie Maritime Ltd and KCB Ltd. Ambrose joined Equity Bank in September 2008.

Head of Internal Audit
Mr. Fwamba holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting Option) degree from the Kenyatta University and is a Certified Public Accountant ( Kenya). He has over 9 years experience in audit having worked with the Central Bank of Kenya and British American (K) Insurance Company. Mr. Fwamba, a Kenyan national, joined the Bank in 2004.

Papius holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting Option) degree from the University of Nairobi. He has over 30 years banking experience having previously worked with Central Bank of Kenya as a regulator of banks, financial institutions and building societies. Mr. Muhindi, a Kenyan national, joined the Bank in 2005.

Head of Security and Administration
Major Mutua holds Advanced Diplomas and Certification in Security Intelligence from Israel , USA and UK. He has over 20 years experience in military intelligence and security management. Major Mutua, a Kenyan, joined the Bank in 2004.

Lydiah Kiburu,
Head of Communications
Lydiah holds a Masters degree in International Development and Diplomacy from the University of Nairobi. She also holds post graduate qualifications in Marketing, Business Management and Mass Communication. She is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Communications for Development Studies. She previously worked with the Africa Regional Office of the World Organization of the Scout Movement as Director of Communications, and Acting Regional Director for the Africa Region. Ms. Kiburu, joined the Bank in 2007.
